Marcellus Howardsville Christian apparently has a pretty good girls’ basketball ballclub, judging by its surprisingly convincing 50-24 triumph over Martin Tuesday night.
The Eagles lifted their overall season record to 10-5. The Lady Clippers, after a 10-1 start, fell to 12-6 overall.
Coach Ben Schipper said starting inside player Avery Jager did not play because of injury and “our team seemed off from the jump. Howardsville Christian shot the ball really well and executed their back cuts to counter our pressure.
“Defensively, they sat in a compact 3-2 zone and we struggled to make shots. We kept preaching movement and dribble drives on the catch to attack the paint, but we were far too stagnant and needed to be much more aggressive.”
On a positive note, freshmen Kayden Jager and Anna Jager used the five quarter rule to play and put together dribble drives in the fourth quarter leading to Kayden’s first varsity points.
Schipper added, “We turn around and play Watervliet tonight, so we’ll have to regroup quickly to compete with a tough Watervliet team.”
Makala Goddard had six points and Macy Thorne and Lizabeth Reinke had five apiece.
The Martin boys’ squad also had a tough night, calling 61-22 to Howardsville, and watched their season record fall to 1-19. Marcellus Howardsville Christian is 16-5.
