Clipper boys go into holiday break with 6-0 record

Going 6-0 before the holiday break is quite an accomplishment for the Martin boys’ varsity basketball squad, but coach Brad Moelker  insists his charges will not rest on their laurels.

The Clippers extended their early season success Thursday with a 53-35 triumph over Watervliet. They pretty much led throughout the contest, 11-7 after the first quarter, 28-17 at intermission and 40-24 at the end of three periods.

It is definitely nice going into break 6-0, but as a team we also know that these six games are just the start of a long season,” Moelker said. “Tonight we used our experience to take advantage of a rebuilding team. Watervliet lost a lot of talent from last year, so they have some players getting their first real playing time on varsity. They really played patient against our defense and forced us to make some adjustments coming out of the first half.  I thought our guys responded well.”

Cayden Curry led Martin with 14 points, Carter Hilton and Clayton Geerligs both added nine and Alex Hardy eight.
“Cayden came off the bench to lead us in scoring,” the coach remarked. “He’s just continuing to play smart offensive basketball. You can tell his dad (David Curry) coached him well growing up because he really understands how the game should be played.
Moelker also said that Michael Morey and Alex Hardy both played well on defense and offense, with a handful of steals and assists as well.
“Though we are 6-0, we realize we have a lot to work on in order to become a great team,” the coach said. “We just have to keep working and growing as a team. The guys understand this and are definitely not satisfied with where we are yet.”
