Clippers now 5-0, inching closer to football playoff berth

The Martin varsity football team moved its season record to 5-0 Saturday evening with a convincing 62-20 triumph at St. Joseph Lake Michigan Catholic.

The game was postponed Friday evening because of lightning and severe weather with the Clippers leading 8-0. Play resumed Saturday evening, with Martin posting the most points it has all season.

Martin’s victory also brings it closer to a berth in the post-season playoffs.

Coach Brad Blauvelt said only 11 plays were run Friday night before lightning halted the game.
On the third play of the evening, Rayne Torres scooped up a fumble and returned it 35 yards for a defensive touchdown and with the two-point conversion it was 8-0 until Saturday evening.
Gabe Meyers led a balanced attack of both running and passing. He  rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns, and he was 4-4 for 85 yards ,including a 48-yard pass to fellow junior Mitchell Jager. The team ran for 270 yards and threw for 150 yards.
Travis Thorne, Cayden Curry and Torres all had one rushing touchdown. Jager finished with two touchdown receptions.
“The defense played well in the first half, but had some miscues in the second half,” Bauvelt said.
Thorne lead the defense with nine tackles, one interception and a fumble recovery.

The Clippers expect a stern test next Friday, however, at Bridgman, which is also undefeated this season thus far and is averaging 55 points a game with a high-octane offense.
