The Martin boys’ basketball team pushed its overall season record to 5-9 Friday night with a 38-32 victory over Saugatuck.
“I thought we really started this game with a lack of intensity,” coach Brad Moelker said. “We ended up tied up at halftime and then were down by a few points throughout the third and fourth quarters. Saugatuck actually controlled a lot of this game. They did a great job of doing little things to take us out of our game. I mean you have to be impressed when a team hustles enough to draw five or six charge calls in the paint.”
However, the Clippers picked up their intensity and defensive pressure and caused some turnovers, finally taking the lead with a few minutes left.
Junior forward Collin Coburn again led the offensive attack with 14 points, Cayden Curry had 13 and and Mitchell Jager nine.
“We always take positives and negatives from every game,” the coach remarked. “We talked after the game and the boys know this was not our best. I was very proud of how we controlled ourselves in the situation at the end. We limited our mistakes throughout the fourth and kept our composure.
“I thought Cayden did a great job tonight. He kept a positive attitude with himself and his teammates. He also did a great job of limiting our team turnovers late in the game.”
Moelker said Coburn and Travis Thome spearheaded the defensive side during that fourth quarter.
“Both of them picked up the pressure and helped us create turnovers when we went on our run in the fourth,” he said.
