The Martin varsity baseball team played a lot better Monday than in its season opener earlier this month, but the result was the same.

The Clippers dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Decatur, 4-3 and 13-1, and saw their overall record slide to 0-4.

Martin led 3-1 going into the fifth inning of the opener, but the Raiders came up with a run in the bottom half of that6 frame and two more in the sixth.

Garrett Dill pitched six inning, giving up just two earned runs, walking three and striking out six. On the offensive side, the Clippers had just three hits, all singles, once each by Dill, Saul Altman and Hunter Fitzpatrick. Caleb Hunderman, Fitzpatrick and Ty Smith scored one run apiece.

The nightcap was marred by a plethora of misjudged fly balls.

Coach Jon Gambee said, “They kept hitting routine fly balls into the lights, but my guys had never had the experience playing a night game like that.”

Sophomore Tanner Curry went just two-thirds of an inning on the mound and game up four runs. He was relieved by Caleb Hunderman, who went the rest of the way in the game, which was shortened for five innings.

Martin will try again in a twin bill Thursday at Marcellus.
