County Emergency Management assessing storm damage

Collaborative community efforts have been in place to recover from the April 14 weather incidents in the Plainwell, Otsego and Martin area.

Allegan County Emergency Management’s attention is heavily focused on damage assessment. Field assessments are being conducted by Emergency Management, County Equalization, and Allegan County Search and Rescue.

The assessments provide a county-wide summary of damage, which is submitted to the Governor for consideration of a state-level declaration of emergency or disaster under Section 12 of Public Act 390 of 1976 and for a request for assistance grants under Section 19.

The agency advises that in the meantime, direct any media inquiries to [email protected]. Residents who sustained damage are encouraged to report it using the storm damage self-assessment tool at: http://www.allegancounty.org/emergency.

Those who need assistance are asked to contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS. Emergency Management officials are unaware of any financial assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for individual property damage experienced by residents or businesses in Allegan County resulting from the April 14 weather incident.

Individuals or businesses who experienced property damage should contact their insurance carrier for direction.

“We will continue to coordinate with local, state, and federal partners to assess needs and provide support,” Emergency Management Coordinator Sarah Clark said. “Our top priority is the safety and well-being of all Allegan County residents.”
