Five members of the Wayland girls’ bowling team have a group hug after winning the O-K Gold/Green Conference championship.

Wayland boys’ bowling coach Sherry Miklusicak calls it “The Continental Curse,” when referring to the habit of the Wildcat girls finishing fourth in regionals, one place out of going to the state tournament.

The Lady Wildcats indeed were fourth again, behind Coldwater, Sturgis and Battle Creek Pennfield in the Division regional meet at Continental Lanes in Kalamazoo. They knocked down 3,402 pins. Coldwater had 3,799, Sturgis 3,643 and Pennfield 3,530.

The boys’ team came in sixth among the 15 teams, scoring a little higher than expected.

Wayland’s Baker game scores were 130, 169, 167, 145, 178 and 170 and in individual games they rolled 822, 785 and 836.

The Lady Wildcats went undefeated in dual matches during the season and easily won the O-K Gold/Green Conference championship, but their bid to go to state at Canton next Friday and Saturday was cut short.

The Wildcat boys rolled Bakers of 165, 152, 145, 171, 167 and 193. Their individuals were 825, 975 and 841.

Representing the green and white in the three single games that followed were:

Jordan Peters 146-160-181; Christian Courser 220; Alex Marble 144; Bryan Franck 152-207-177; Dylan Roberts 149-246-165, and Dillon Smith 150-196-174.

Split score: 166.

Sturgis won the regional title, Battle Creek Pennfield was second and Coldwater third to earn the trip to Plymouth Canton.
