Defending state soccer champ Gull Lake too much for Wildcats

Two-time defending state CGirls-Soccerlass B champion Richland Gull Lake brought the Wayland girls’ soccer team down from their cloud after two shutout victories last week.

The Blue Devils mercilessly put pressure on Wildcat goalie Hannah Anderson, who put up a heroic defense with 16 saves, but yielded five goals on 21 shots on goal. Wayland managed three shots against Gull Lake’s goalkeeper.

Gull Lake took a 3-0 lead at intermission and never looked back.

Coach Ben Sleeman said he was impressed with his team’s effort.

“They battled throughout the game and kept a very dangerous team at bay for stretches in the game, but in the end they were unable to keep up with the visiting team’s firepower. Hannah Anderson and the defense played well again, despite facing constant pressure.”

The Wildcats girls are back in action Tuesday night on the road as they take on Zeeland West for their final game before spring break. They are now 2-1 overall for the season.
