District hoops tourneys slated for Hopkins and Wayland

Before Tuesday night’s 54-45 victory over Middleville, some observers believed the Wayland girls’ basketball team’s best chance to get a victory this season would be in the Class B post-season tournament at Hopkins.

The Wildcats will play Allegan, a team that owns an 11-6 overall record, at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27. Plainwell (11-6) and Fennville (3-12) will play in the other opening round Monday game.

The winner will take on Hopkins at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 1. Either Plainwell or Fennville will play Otsego in the other district semifinal at 7 p.m.

Finals will be at 7 p.m. Friday, March 3.

Martin plays at Bellevue at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 1. The Broncos are 12-4. Martin is 5-11. Winner plays either Battle Creek Calhoun (6-8) or Battle Creek St. Phillip (11-5) on Friday, March 3.

The boys’ tournaments

The Wayland boys’ varsity basketball team (14-3) has to be the favorite in the Class B district tournament March 6-10 at Wayland High School.

The Wildcats, ranked No. 9 in the most recent state-wide poll, will have the home court advantage and only one of the opponents in the field, Fennville, was sporting a winning record as of last week.

Wayland will open the tourney by entertaining Hopkins (7-9) at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 6. Plainwell and Otsego will play in the later Monday night game. Both squads are 8-8.

The Wayland-Hopkins winner will play Allegan at 5:30 in the district semifinals and Fennville (14-2) will meet either Plainwell or Otsego at 7 p.m. that evening.

The finals will be at 7 p.m. Friday, March 10.

Martin will open the Class D tournament at 7 p.m. Monday, March 6, against Battle Creek Calhoun Christian (8-7). The winner will play host Battle Creek St. Phillip (10-5) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The other teams in the tourney include Kalamazoo Phoenix (8-5), Kalamazoo Heritage Christian (2-8), Bellevue (13-1) and Kalamazoo Lakeside (5-4).
