The Wayland Union School District has announced schedule changes for Friday night’s homecoming football game.
Supt. Norm Taylor said, “With a recent case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) found in Kent County last week and a non-human confirmation in Allegan County, we will be adjusting the athletic schedules to conclude before dusk based on recommendations from our state and county health departments.”
- All athletic games will begin at 5 p.m. (unless scheduled at an earlier time)
- Powder Puff game will be at 5 p.m. Bonfire is canceled (indoor cider/doughnuts after game)
- The homecoming parade Oct. 4 has been canceled
- Homecoming football game will have a 5 p.m. kickoff
- Crowning ceremonies will be held during halftime after the band performance
Taylor added, “Please note that these were difficult decisions to make but our primary concern is for the health and safety of our students, staff and coaches. We appreciate your understanding.”
Follow these guidelines when spending time outdoors to reduce the risk of disease carried by mosquitoes:
- Apply insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET, or other U.S. Environmental Protection Agency registered product to exposed skin or clothing, and always follow the manufacturer’s directions for use
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors and apply insect repellent to clothing
- Maintain window and door screening to help keep mosquitoes outside
- Empty water from mosquito breeding sites around the home, such as buckets, unused kiddie pools, old tires or similar sites where mosquitoes may lay eggs
- Use nets and/or fans over outdoor eating areas
