Wayland High School freshman Evie Mathis has added another championship title to her already impressive resume in track and field.
The daughter of Rick and Cindy Mathis of Wayland, she won the Freshman Girls Pole Vault Division at the New Balance Nationals last weekend in Philadelphia. This makes her a two-time national champion.
Mathis cleared 3.4 meters, the same as 11 feet, 1.5 inches, and she was the only girl to clear it. She made it on her first attempt.
Mathis a year ago was national junior high champion in the pole vault and this past spring she cleared 12 feet to take second in the state Division 2 track meet, breaking the school record of 11-6, she posted earlier in the season.
