Evie Mathis wins national middle school pole vault competition championship

Wayland has another interscholastic national champion. Evie Mathis, who will be a freshman at Wayland High School this fall, won the Adidas national middle school title in the pole vault at the competition Saturday at Greensboro, N.C.

She cleared 3.63 meters, which translates into 11 feet, 11 inches, one inch below her personal best of 12 feet. She has spent virtually all of her eighth grade season ranked No. 1 in the pole vault nationwide.

Mathis is the first Wayland athlete to win a national title since Presley Hudson, then a senior at Central Michigan University won the basketball three-point shooting competition among male and female athletes and finished with the highest free throw percentage of all NCAA players at 94.3%.

Mathis is the daughter of Rick and Cindy Mathis of Wayland.
