Ex-Wildcat Leigha Morse has 7 hits in twin bill sweep

Former Wayland High School standout catcher Leigha Morse overcame a heavy heart Wednesday to lash out seven hits in Aquinas College’s doubleheader sweep of Cornerstone University.

Morse, a sophomore at Aquinas, went 7-for-10 not long after learning the news of the death of her father, Ryan, a perennial Wildcat athletics booster. Her mother, Kerri, explained on Facebook that the family decided to have Leigha play in spite of the recent tragedy because that’s what her father would have wanted.

Morse, who was a member of the 2015 Division 2 state championship team, came up with a key RBI single in extra innings of the opener against Cornerstone in a 10-8 victory. Then she went 4-for-4 with a couple of doubles in the nightcap, a 12-1 romp.

Morse’s brother, Carter, has played baseball and football at Wayland High School.

Wayland varsity softball coaches Cheri Ritz and Nicole Cardosa have announced they are dedicating this season to Ryan Morse.
