Martin Friday night suffered what can only be described as a sweltering 35-6 defeat, at the hands of divisional opponent Fennville.
Temperatures hovered in the upper 90s for much of the game and both teams were visibly affected, even with a delayed start.
Junior Clayton Geerlings led a dynamic first drive for Martin, bringing the ball to just two yards shy of a touchdown. Quarterback Travis Thorne scored on a keeper to put the Clippers up 6-0. Fennville got comfortable on defense, and that single TD would be all for Martin.
The possession went back and forth during the second quarter, as both teams had impressive interceptions and fumble recoveries. The Blackhawks would profit from the exchange, as Adam Lavery scored and a teammate made the field goal.
The Clippers were ultimately outmatched, as the Blackhawk offense also gained traction. Austin Lewis scored two touchdowns and Lavery totaled three touchdowns.
Fennville was playing its second game without head coach Brian Sackett, who was suspended by the administration for two games after a sideline incident with one of his players. Sackett will return next week for Fennville’s homecoming against Galesburg-Augusta.
The Clippers, now 2-3 for the season overall, are hoping for a spot in the playoffs this season, with three wins needed. Martin will travel to play the 3-2 Saugatuck Indians next week, continuing divisional games.
