Five area basketball teams off to winning starts for ’23

Five of the six basketball programs for Wayland, Martin and Hopkins are enjoying the Christmas break with winning records.

The Wayland boys are 4-0, the first time that’s happened in a quite a spell. They will return to the hardcourt twice next week, both games at home, non-league against Lowell Tuesday Jan. 3, and opening O-K Gold Conference action Friday, Jan. 6, vs. Cedar Springs.

The girls, who are 6-2 overall, will open league play Friday at home as well, playing Cedar Springs at 6 p.m.

Hopkins boys will attempt to extend their four-game winning streak, having lost only to Wayland, with a non-league contest at Muskegon Catholic Tuesday, Jan. 3, then the’ll be at home to start O-K Silver Conference action at home against Sparta.

The Lady Vikings, now 4-2, will be on the road Tuesday against non-league opponent West Ottawa Tuesday and then will entertain Sparta at 6 p.m. Friday.

Martin girls particularly are welcoming the break because of a rash of illnesses that helped cause their first defeat after five victories. They and the Clipper boys will be on the home court Friday vs. Saugatuck.
