Maggie Whitney

Wayland High School graduate Maggie Whitney last weekend captured the national title in the 800-meter run at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

Whitney, a senior at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, came into the finals with the fastest time in the prelims (2:15). In the final stretch, she passed two women to win the 800 with a time of 2:13.09. She finished less than a half a second ahead of second place.

Her time moved her to No. 2 all time in Aquinas history. She is the first women to win an indoor track event since Adri Sigafoose won the same event in 2018 in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Whitney later on Saturday ran the 1200-meter leg in the women’s distance medley relay. Joining her were Tarshana Kimbrough (400m), Grace Sweet (800m), and Hannah Adler (1600m). The Saints finished eighth in the event with a time of 12:39. This is the seventh time in school history, the women’s DMR has finished as All-Americans.
