Wayland High School freshman Evie Mathis officially broke the school record in the pole vault by clearing 11-6 Tuesday at a tri-meet at Middleville Thornapple Kellogg.

The downside was that Mathis, who sat out the season-opening meet with an injury, had to settle for a tie for first place with Cedar Springs junior Taylor Diamond.

Meanwhile, the Wildcat boys’ track squad did very well in relays and in the sprints to take the meet against Cedar and TK.

Junior Kaharrie Pureifoy captured firsts in the 100- and 200-meter races in 11.45 and 23.29 seconds, respectively. Teammate Cannon Fenn was right behind him in the 200, runner-up at 24.09. Fenn then took all the marbles in the 400 in 52.76 and teammate Aidan Reeder was second.

Senior Devin Weaver was first in the 800 at 2:05.46 and was second in the 1600.

The Wildcats captured the top spot in three of the four relay races. Terry Sylvester, Austin Graham, Cam Mouketou and Pureifoy hooked up to win the 400 in 44.83 seconds; Reeder, Graham. Mouketou and Fenn combined for 1:35.26 in the 800 and Travis Koon, Dylan Pallett, Henry Oudbier and Weaver checked in first in the 3200 in 8:54.59.

Sophomore Adam Huff was the highlight of field events, taking first in the discus at 134-06. Bryce Drew, Margin Howard and Warren Smith went 2-3-4 in the high jump.

Taking first places in the women’s meet were 

the 400-meter relay team of Taylor Wolf, Ana Teunissen Faith Rollandini and Laney Wolf in 53.5 seconds, sophomore Taylor Hoogewind in the discus at 91-03 and Breanna Hyde in the long jump at 16-04.5.

Laney and Taylor Wolf went 2-3 in the 100 for the Lady Wildcats, the Wolfs, Ana Teunissen and Elliot Antel took second through fifth in the 200. Breanna Hyde was runner-up in the 100 hurdles and Olivia Barabas the same in the 800.

Antel, Hyde, Emma Byers and Barabas hooked up for second in the 1600 relay.
