It was Martin’s last homecoming football game on the current field Friday night, and Gobles spoiled the festivities by posting a 29-20 decision.

The Clippers next fall will play on a new field as part of the district’s facilities renovation project.

The visiting Tigers struck first early when Tyler Stedman intercepted a Clipper pass and went nearly 70 yards for a touchdown. A stout defensive stand by Martin at its own 5-yard  line prevented Gobles from scoring another touchdown on its next drive.

But in the second quarter Stedman would score again for Gobles, making the score 13-0. The Tigers weren’t done for the half, Hunter Underwood (8) would run in another touchdown to stake the visiting eleven to a 19-0 advantage.

Payton Hunt scored a highlight-worthy touchdown just before the half, and Carter Hilton kicked the extra point, bringing the Clippers to a 19-7 deficit at intermission.

The Clippers started the third period with renewed effort. Hunter Kershaw picked up a teammates fumble and walked in for the touchdown. Junior Cayden Curry then added a TD and Hilton once again kicked the extra point. Sadly, the 20 points put up by Martin was not enough. 

Underwood scored his second TD of the night and the Tiger Defense tackled Martin QB Travis Thorne in the end zone for a safety. 

It was Gobles’ first victory of the season at 1-6. Martin is toting a 2-5 record heading into the final game on its current field, as the Clippers will host divisional foe Galesburg Augusta in a combined Senior-Parents Night.
