The Hopkins darrin-smith-coachingBoard of Education has decided not to take any action now on a request to have head boys’ varsity basketball coach Darrin Smith replaced.

A statement that appeared on the school district’s web site Friday declared:

“The Board of Education appreciates all that have come forward to express their concerns and support for the boys’ basketball program. The board has taken the concerns that were brought forth seriously. The Board has investigated the concerns with the coaching staff. After consideration of the information provided, it has decided not to make any immediate changes at this time. However, a plan of action has been established for the boys’ basketball program, and the board will re-evaluate the program at the conclusion of the season.”

Smith came under fire last month when Lisa Battjes, parent of a player who was cut by Smith, initiated a petition to remove Smith from his coaching duties. She has alleged the coach has shown nepotism, favoritism and intimidation and bullying behavior. The petition at last reporting has 40 signatures.

Those rallying around Smith insist the movement is fueled by disgruntled parents. They also have asserted that making a coaching change at this point in the season would cause more harm than good and would be disruptive for the school and student-athletes.

Smith is starting his fifth season as head coach. His teams have yet to post a winning record, going 5-15, 6-15, 10-12 and 8-13.
