Hopkins beats Class A foe to win holiday hoops tourney

Hunter Lewellyn scored 18 points to lead the Vikings.

The Hopkins boys’ varsity basketball team captured the Hamilton Holiday basketball Tournament championship Thursday evening with a stunning 62-59 upset victory over Class A Grandville.

The Vikings lifted their overall season record to 3-1, with their only loss by just two points in the season opener against Comstock Park.

Hopkins had balanced scoring, which made the squad difficult to defend. Hunter Lewellyn led all scorers with 18 points, Josh Sapp contributed 14, and sophomore Drew Weber pitched in 12, all coming in the fourth quarter.

“Showing mental and physical toughness, Hopkins withstood a late Grandville run by making crucial plays down the stretch,” said coach Jake Jewitt, who just started his varsity coaching career earlier this month.

The Vikings will play next at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2 against West Catholic and will open O-K Silver Conference action Friday at Belding.
