Hopkins boys finish last (14th) without No. 1 runner

The Hopkins boys had a rough outing Wednesday at the Southwest Michigan Rust Buster cross-country meet, finishing last among 14 schools competing

The Vikings accumulated 353 team points, well behind Jenison’s winning total of 43.

Junior harrier Kenyon Katje turned in Hopkins’ best time with a five-kilometer time of 19:26.2. Freshman Isaiah Robinson was 78th, freshman Derek Zapolnik was 82nd, sophomore Adam Halstead checked in 98th and sophomore Vejay DeZeeuw 103rd.

Hopkins’ No. 1 runner, sophomore Jack Estelle, did not compete.

The girls’ squad finished 10th among 13 teams in the field, accumulating 202 points, eight in back of Mattawan.

Senior Jaeden Harshberger led Hopkins by taking 17th place in 20:36.59, junior Kambria Moored was 21st in 21:03, sophomore Allison Breining was 48th, freshman Lillian Dewey 55th and senior Abigail Zalis 71st. There were 118 girls competing.

Otsego claimed the girls’ title in the race.

    Last week you stole the coach’s Facebook post to add quotes to your story without asking him and this week you got 5 of the athletes names incorrect and failed to account for the true number of teams, 19, in each race. Also, if you did any true journalistic research or put in any effort, you would be aware that while shorthanded, the majority of the athletes improved their time from their previous meet. You are largely unaware of the actual workings of these teams and continue to do all of these athletes a great disservice with your lazy, poor journalism.
