The Hopkins boys’ varsity bowling team tasted defeat for the first time this season Monday with a surprisingly lopsided 27-3 loss to O-K Silver Conference rival Kelloggsville.

The Lady Vikings, however, hiked their overall season record to 9-2 meanwhile with a 26-4 victory over Kelloggsville.

The Hopkins and Kelloggsville boys were vying for first place in the league.

Kelloggsville rolled impressive 196 and 192 scored in the Baker games to take a 10-0 early lead. It didn’t stop there as the Rockets rolled a 1,031 series in the first match, with three of their bowlers rolling 200 games (Williams 226, M. Postma 225, and Tyler Boeske 211).

So Kelloggsville took all but one point in the first match. Hopkins only point came on sophomore Brenden Gossman’s 223 beating Gage Nickelsons 192. In the second match much of the same had occurred for the Rockets as they took three of five match points, total pins and total for the two matches. Hopkins managed to take two points in the second match, as Gossman took his point with a 187 to a 177, and Mikee Schumacher took his point with a 172.

Hopkins girls shot a 152 and a 155 in the Baker games to take a 10-0 lead over Kelloggsville. Then in the first match the Lady Vikings rolled a series of 798 to Kelloggsville’s 644, giving them four points for total pins. Hopkins also took four of five points in the first match, with Hazel Smith rolling her high game of the year with a 258.

In the second match, Hopkins took two of five possible points, total pins of the match and total pins for the entire match. Jenny Rietman took her second point of the day rolling a 154 as well as Cheyenne Miller, who rolled a 148.

Hazel Smith had a battle going in the five spot but came up short rolling an impressive 193 but Emily Tanis had a 202.
