Hopkins and Wayland split in ‘Border Wars’ doubleheader

Hopkins and Wayland split their doubleheader “Border War” Friday evening on the Cornerstone University diamond.

The Vikings prevailed 12-1 in the first game, thanks to a 10-run second inning rally. Wayland came back to take the nightcap, 8-7.

Hopkins scored in the first on a groundout by Brock Eller and a single by Tyler Zomerlei. In the big inning, runs were brought home by a single by Austin Black, a double by Brenden Gossman, two errors, a walk by Ethan Nagel, a walk by Black, and a walk by Eller.
James Wubben earned the win for Hopkins Vikings Varsity. He pitched five innings, giving up one run, five hits, and striking out four.
Hopkins collected 11 hits. Ezran Tehennepe, Terry Thomas, and Black each collected two hits to lead Hopkins Vikings Varsity. Hopkins Vikings Varsity didn’t commit a single error in the field.
Wayland had five hits in the game.

The victory lifted the Vikings’ overall season record to 14-4-1.

Travis Cutler started on the mound for the Wildcats in game two and picked up the win, tossing six innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three. Jamie Snyder pitched the seventh inning for Wayland and picked up the save.

Leading the offensive attack for the Wildcats were Mitch Dykstra, Travis Cutler, Carter Morse, Cam Ritz, Jared Rankin, and Kayd Hulst. Dykstra was 3-for-4 with a run scored, Cutler was 2-for-4 with a run scored and 2 RBIs, Morse was 2-for-3 with a double, 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Ritz was 2-for-4, Rankin was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Hulst was 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
