The Hopkins boys’ varsity basketball team Friday had its overall season record evened at 4-4 with a tough 49-43 defeat at the hands of Wyoming Godwin Heights.
The Hopkins girls’ group, however, doubled up Godwin by a 54-27 count to score its first victory of the season.
The Vikings now own an 0-1 record in the O-K Silver Conference. They will entertain Sparta Tuesday evening in only their second league contest this season.
Godwin grabbed a 10-point lead in the opening quarter, but the Vikings battled back to whittle their deficit down to one point, 22-21 at intermission. The Wolverines enjoyed a four-point lead, 36-32, to start the final period.
Nick Schultz and Merek Zapolnik finished with 10 points apiece and Micah Estelle chipped in 8.
“We played well enough tonight to be right there, but we can’t be content with that,” coach Jake Jewett said. “We need to play much stronger and tougher in order to beat a good team like Godwin Heights. While I’m happy with our defensive effort, holding Godwin under 50 points, we need to find a way to get more offensive production
