Hopkins enjoys non-league sweep in doubleheader

The Hopkins softball team Thursday jumped all over Holland Christian in a non-league doubleheader, claiming wins of 13-4 and 23-0.

The Lady Vikings scored first in the opening inning the Peyton Roxbury singled home Hannah Brinks, who had doubled. Ava Vanderkolk singled, Brinks hit a sacrifice fly and Jessi Spray’s single accounted for two more runs in the third.

Hopkins widened the gap with five runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by singles by Roxbury, Cami Hibma, Madison Washburn, Kate Steffes, and Madison Schwartz.

Brinks captured the pitching victory, limiting Holland to seven hits, walking four and striking out nine.

Vanderkolk, Roxbury, Schwartz, Spray, Brinks and Lyla Reynolds paced the 16-hit attack with two hits apiece.

Hopkins made quick work of its opponent in the second game, scoring 12 times in the first inning and seven more in the third. Featured in the fireworks were a couple of doubles by Reynolds, a triple by Vanderkolk and singles by Brinks, Spray, Washburn, Vanderkolk and Hibma.

Brinks tossed a shutout over five innings, walking one and striking out seven.

The Vikings, now 10-5 overall, next will play Middleville Thornapple Kellogg in a tournament Saturday morning.
