Hopkins explodes in 2nd half to overcome Holland

This year’s football schedule for O-K Conference schools has been a bit confusing because of the realignment of divisions.

Seven schools, including Kenowa Hills, Sparta and Cedar Springs left the O-K Conference earlier this year and formed their own league. The result has been the scrambling of football members.

For example, Wayland has left its usual membership in the O-K Gold Division and now is a member of the O-K White, along with Forest Hills Eastern, Spring Lake, Hamilton, Grand Rapids West Catholic and Grand Rapids Christian.

The same is true for Hopkins, though the Vikings remain in the O-K Silver, along with Wyoming Godwin Heights, Belding, Kelloggsville, and Comstock Park, but newcomers are Holland and Fruitport.

West Catholic 38 Wayland 0

Wayland and the Grand Rapids West Catholic Falcons have never been in the same league, and the Wildcats Friday night probably would like to see them part ways in the future.

The ‘Cats suffered their second shutout defeat of the season, with the first coming at the hands of Hamilton 35-0. Both shutouts were posted by O-K White Conference rivals.

Martin 70 Brethren 8

The Clippers hiked their overall season record to 6-0, featuring a whopping 64 points in the first half of the rout. The Bobcats probably are glad not to be in the same league, the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Martin has not lost a football game since Sept. 15 of last year.

Hopkins 48 Holland 21

It was a big night for the Vikings, who spotted the visiting Dutch by a point, 21-20, at intermission and then exploded in the latter 24 minutes with 28 unanswered points.

The victory moved Hopkins closer to an O-K Silver Conference showdown with undefeated Belding in the regular season closer. The Vikings now are 5-1 overall and 3-0 in league play.

The win was an appropriate nod to the celebration of 75 years of Hopkins High School football.
