Hopkins girls 4th, Wayland 5th in Yankee Springs invitational

Wayland freshman Olivia Barabas continues to be impressive in her earliest varsity cross-country efforts, as she checked in 11th Monday at the Coach B Invitational at the Yankee Springs State Park.

Only one female harrier came in under 20 minutes for the five-kilometer race. Barabas’ time was 21:48.27.

Wayland girls finished fifth in the Thornapple Division with 126 points. Caledonia won it with 23 and host Middleville Thornapple Kellogg was second with 69 among the eight teams.

Senior Gracie Hasse was 21st for the Lady Wildcats, sophomore Hannah Smith was 38th, junior Naomi Oosterhouse 39th and sophomore Serenna VanHouten 52nd.

The Hopkins girls were fourth among seven teams with 104 points. Grand Rapids West Catholic won the Kellogg Division with 42 points.

Senior Alyssa Beilby once again was the top Lady Viking harrier with a 12th-place finish at 23:31.38. Alexis Zalis was 15th, Astrid Baandrup 23rd, Hannah Fisher 25th and Mary Wells 29th.

Wayland boys finished eighth in the Thornapple field with 195 points. Freshman Travis Koon just missed breaking 20 minutes while taking 46th, Ian Russell was 50th, Jared Jandernoa 67th, Steven Mosher 69th and Devin Weaver 92nd.

Hopkins failed to field five runners for the competition and therefore did not score as a team.

Sophomore Adam Ball was 31st in 20:47.81, Dean Heiden was 76th and Zachary Wisser 78th.

The top runner for the Hopkins boys, Todd Henley, and the Wayland girls, Rylee Cronkright, did not compete.
