The Hopkins girls’ varsity basketball team remained undefeated in O-K Silver Conference play this season Friday by running past Wyoming Godwin Heights, 68-49.
The victory lifted the Lady Vikings’ league record to 5-0, all alone in first place, and they now are 9-3 overall.
Senior Mady Weber led Hopkins with 24 points, Kate Cleypool counted 13 and Nevaeh Helderop 12.
The Hopkins boys lost 66-58 to Godwin, which is a top contender for the Silver championship.
Coach Jake Jewett said, “It was a hard fought game. Our guys didn’t back down. Trent Baugh led us with scoring with 21 points, followed by Noah Corneille with 11. Zander Hitzler pitched in 9.”
The coach also praised the defensive effort of Jayden Prather.
The Vikings led 32-22 at halftime.
“I loved the energy we came out with, we took care of the ball, and our defensive effort was awesome,” Jewett said. “We knew after halftime that Godwin was going to punch back, and it was a back-and-forth game throughout the second half. Down the stretch, we just couldn’t hang on to the lead.”
The verdict leaves Hopkins with an overall record of 7-4 (2-3 in the league).
The Viking guys play next Tuesday at Comstock Park while the girls will be on the home court.
