Just as it has all season long, the Hopkins girls’ varsity cross-country team finished second in the O-K Silver Conference cross-country meet Tuesday at the Ironwood Golf Course, Byron Center.

The Lady Vikings came up with 66 team points, while Sparta won it with 40.

Senior Nevaeh Helderop and surging junior Jaeden Harshberger came in sixth and seventh, in that order, for Hopkins, in 20:36.2 and 20:43.2. Sophomore Kambria Wood captured 12th in 21:26.5, improving freshman Allison Breining was 19th in 22:35.7 and Abigail Zalis rounded out the scoring in 23rd place at 23:08.3.

The Hopkins guys finished six among the six teams in the meet with 120 points. Sparta ran away from the field in that portion of the meet with just 26 points.

Freshman Jack Estelle raised more than a few eyebrows by claiming seventh place in 17:32.2. Sophomore Kenyon Katje broke the 20-minute barrier checking in 27th at 19:47.3. Freshmen Johnathan Buskirk and Vijay DeZeeuw were 45th and 46th and Nathan Onderlinde crossed the line in 49th.

Hopkins will join the fun at the U.S.-131 Motorsports Park near Martin for the annual Allegan County meet Friday.
