Vikings clinch share of O-K Silver basketball crown

The Hopkins boys’ varsity basketball team clinched a share of the O-K Silver Conference championship Tuesday night with a convincing 76-27 victory over Belding.

The Vikings now are 14-5 overall and finished league play with a 10-2 record. If NorthPointe Christian and Calvin Christian win their last two games they will tied for the crown, having beaten each other once.

“This is our first conference championship in 23 years (1997),” reported coach Jake Jewett. “Drew Weber, Tyler Zomerlei, Nathan Tew, and Colton Hooker are our four seniors who led us tonight in their last home game as Vikings.”

Hopkins won its girls’ basketball contest Tuesday evening, 55-38 over Belding, but both the Wayland girls’ and boys’ squads lost their encounters with Grand Rapids Christian.

The Lady Vikings improved their overall season record to 11-8 overall, 8-4 in the O-K Silver Conference.

The Lady Wildcats completed their regular season with a 12-8 mark by dropped a 55-34 decision to GR Christian. The Wildcat boys lost 77-43 and now are 0-19 for the season overall.

The Hopkins and Wayland girls’ teams will meet next Monday 6 p.m. in the opening round of the MHSAA Division 2 tournament at South Christian High School.

The Hopkins boys will close out the regular season at Tri-Unity Christian Thursday, March 5, in non-league play.
