The Hopkins softball team won one, lost one and tied one to finish second in a tournament in Ionia Saturday.
Believe it or not, the team Hopkins tied was the tourney winner.
The Vikings started the day with a 6-6 tie against Greenville, then defeated St. Johns 8-2 and finally lost 11-8 to Ionia. The day’s action left them with a 14-8-1 overall record.
Hopkins rallied for four runs in the sixth and seventh innings to knot the count, but an eighth inning failed to deliver a winner.
Dahlia Veldhouse went the distance on the mound, giving up 10 hits, only two earned runs, walking two and striking out seven on her way to a no decision outing.
On the offensive side Ava Vanderkolk belted a home run and a double to knock in three runs and Cami Hibma added a double. Madison Schwartz delivered four singles while Vanderkolk and Hibma both had a couple of hits.
In game two, the Vikings scored in every inning but one to subdue St. Johns.
Hannah Brinks, though she suffered a hand injury in a twin bill Friday, hurled Hopkins to victory, yielding eight hits and both runs, walking two and fanning eight.
Hibma delivered the biggest blow this time with a homer and a single, Vanderkolk unloaded three doubles and Avery Osborn added another. Lyla Reynolds drilled three singles and brought home three runs and Osborn collected three RBIs on a couple of singles.
Despite coming up with 17 hits, Hopkins fell 11-8 to Ionia in its last contest of the day. The Vikings led 7-4 after five innings, but then the Bulldogs staged a five-run outburst in the sixth.
Vanderkolk, Reynolds and Peyton Roxbury each had three hits and Hibma, Rhiannon Break and and Madison Washburn had two apiece. The biggest blows came from Reynolds and Vanderkolk with a home apiece, and Hibma drilled a double.
Veldhouse started and absorbed the loss and Brinks came on relief for two innings. Brinks struck out five in two and two-thirds innings of work.
One sore spot for Hopkins in that ballgame was seven errors in the field and none of the runs scored against Veldhouse were earned.
