Hopkins’ Henley takes 3rd in Allegan County X-C meet

The Wayland boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams prepped for the Allegan County meet by running on the Rabbit River Trail.

Hopkins ace Todd Henley finished third in the annual Allegan County Cross-Country meet Friday at the U.S.-131 Motor Sports Park near Martin.

Henley traversed the five-kilometer race in 16:46.18 to take third behind Corey Gargas and Nik Pettinga of Saugatuck. Gorgas blistered the course in just 15:22.82.

Saugatuck won the boys’ meet with 33 points and Otsego had 53. Hopkins finished fifth with 123 and Wayland was sixth with 168.

Saugatuck also won the girls’ meet with 34 points and Plainwell was second with 69 and Hopkins third at 104. Wayland was fifth with 117, as seven teams competed.

Dan Rauch finished 21st for the Viking boys, in 17:56.79, Zach Nutter was 37th, Jake Pastoor 52nd and Andrew Hazen 62nd.

For Wayland, Ian Russell finished 42nd in 19:075.34 and Jarod Geerligs was right behind in 43rd with a time of 19:07.78. Elijah Gamelin was 50th Andrew VanBaal 56th and Christian Curser 61st.

Sophomore Carsen Young finished 17th in 17:50.88 and Kyle Pallett was 41st in 19:04.75, but the Clippers did not have enough runners to field a full team in the scoring.

There were 93 runners in the boys’ competition.

Wayland junior Rylee Cronkright paced her team with a sixth-place finish in 20:13.09 and Jasmine Fisher of Hopkins was ninth in 20:15.93.

Other Lady Vikings placing were Laura Velderman 14th, Emma Helder 16th, Alyssa Beilby 32nd and Alexis Zalis 39th.

Remaining Lady Wildcat placers were Zoe Antel 20th, freshman Haylee Jasinski 26th, Gracie Hasse 28th and Mackenzie VanderWeide 47th.

Sara Tyrell finished 56th for Martin.

There were 88 runners in all.
