Hopkins and Grandville Calvin Christian nearly every year have a knock-down, drag-out showdown for the O-K Silver Conference volleyball championship. Calvin usually prevails, but this year the crown could belong to the Lady Vikings, who came up with a nail-biting three-set sweep, 25-23, 25-20 and 25-21.

It was a particularly satisfying night for coach Terri Wisser and seniors Mady Weber and Corrie Wisser, who have had to settle for being also-rans to the Squires in years gone by.

The two league powers shared the league title two years ago after Hopkins won the league tournament.

But this time, it’s Hopkins in the driver’s seat with a 5-0 dual match record and the conference tournament approaching.

But the Vikings still have to get past NorthPointe Christian next Thursday. The Mustangs lead the standings with a 6-0 dual match record and they include Calvin as one of their victims.

“Prior to the match (Thursday night against Calvin Christian) we recognized our seniors Mady Weber and Corrie Wisser, said coach Terri Wisser. “The Lady Vikes focused their efforts on the court and came away with a 3-0 win.”

Leading Hopkins’ efforts in individual statistics were:

• Kills: Corrie Wisser/Mady Weber 8, Kate Cleypool 7, Lilly Iciek 4, Lyla Reynolds 3, Peyton Roxbury 2.

• Assists: Corrie Wisser 24.

• Aces: Corrie Wisser 8, Lilly Iciek 3, Mady Weber/Kate Cleypool 1.

• Blocks: Lilly Iciek 3, Corrie Wisser/Alison Williams/Lyla Reynolds/Mady Weber 1.

• Digs: Ellie Sebright 15, Corrie Wisser 12, Mady Weber 10, Kate Cleypool 5, Kylee Sykes 4.

Hopkins, which now has an overall record of 20-7-4, also will face Belding Oct. 17.
