The Hopkins boys’ varsity basketball lost a tough one in double overtime in non-conference action at home against West Michigan Aviation Academy, 65-64..
Hopkins had the lead throughout the early going, 16-8, 22-14 at the period stops, but wound up tied 42-all at the rend of regulation. The two squads battled evenly to end the first overtime session at 49-49.
Nick Schultz finished with 25 points for the Vikings, Micah Estelle added 14, and Cruz Hitzler chipped in 11.
Coach Jake Jewett said Cruz also played stellar defense on Aviation’s best player all night.
“This was a game we definitely feel like we should’ve won ,” the coach said. “We did a lot of things well and improved in some areas from our last game. Credit to Aviation though, they made more plays than we did down the stretch. I’m proud of the way we fought, battled through adversity, and executed the game plan going in.”
The verdict left Hopkins with an overall of 4-3.
“We need to regroup and come ready to host Godwin Heights on Friday, Jan. 5″,” Jewett added.
