Hopkins, O-K Silver suffer bad playoffs opening night

It was a really awful night of football for the O-K Silver Conference Friday.

None of the four teams in the league won its first-round playoff game. League champ Comstock Park was hammered by Grand Rapids West Catholic. Belding was blasted by GR Catholic Central. Sparta lost to Whitehall. And Hopkins came up short 40-6 against Portland.

Hopkins fell behind 20-0 in the first quarter after the Red Raiders scored three touchdowns and converted on two kicked PATs. The Vikings looked like they were going to give Portand a tussle in the second period, scoring a TD and cutting their deficit to 20-6 at intermission.

But the Red Raiders, who almost upset powerhouse Grand Rapids Catholic Central during a 7-2 regular season, pulled away in the third quarter.

Hopkins completed a reasonably satisfying season after getting walloped by Hudsonville Unity in the campaign opener and getting shut out by Allendale. The Vikings finished with a 5-5 overall record.

Hudsonville Unity, by the way, scored more than 60 points in its playoff opening win.
