The Hopkins High School varsity football team this week is rated No. 6 in the state in Division 5 by the Associated Press.
Interestingly, Kalamazoo United, which has defeated the Vikings in their last two post-season playoff appearances, is No. 10 in the same poll and Belding, which Hopkins bested 34-28 in a showdown last Friday, is honorable mention.
Grand Rapids Catholic Central, a perennial powerhouse, is ranked No. 3 in Division 5. Grand Rapids South Christian is rated No. 1 in Division 4.
It was somewhat surprising that Martin, undefeated at 3-0 this season and 11-1 last season, was only listed as honorable mention in the eight-man football poll.
The Vikings will be back in action Friday night against Wyoming Godwin Heights.
The D5 district 36 includes
Belding 3-1
Comstock Park 1-3
GR Catholic Central 4-0
GR West Catholic 3-1
Hopkins 4-0
Lake Odessa Lakewood 2-2
Portland 3-1
Wyoming Lee 1-3
The 8 teams (this year all teams make the playoff) has a 21-11 win – loss record, so there is considerable strength in this one.
