Hopkins Schools accepting bids for leasing farm land

The Hopkins Public School District is accepting written bids for tillable farm land leases for about 40 acres near the corner of 128th Avenue and 24th Street in Hopskins Township.

Business Manager Katie Jager has indicated all proposals must be submitted by 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4.

School officials have noted preference will be given to bidders whose main operations are within the boundaries of the local school district. Of the approximate 40 acres, 38-plus are considered tillable.

The leases will be good for three years, 2021 through 2023.

Why does a school district own property unless they plan on using for a future site for expansion? Or was this donated by a family for school use, such as 4H or agricultural classes?
Was the school taxed by the township for this land? This leasing deal makes no sense unless it is to pay taxes and cover expenses.
Or are they into land speculation?

Based on what a school official told me several years ago, it was bought to use for future expansion.
