Hopkins softball outing was like day and night

It wasn’t a day-night doubleheader, but the performances turned in by Hopkins Thursday was a lot like day and night.

The Lady Vikings looked sharp in defeating Zeeland East in the opener 5-1, but then turned 180 degrees for the nightcap in an 11-0 loss.

Sophomore Hannah Brinks was masterful n the mound in the opener, limiting the Chix to just four hits, walking none and striking out five.

Cami Hibma came through with the big blow offensively with a home run and two RBIs. Lyla Reynolds had a double and a single and Peyton Roxbury drilled a couple of singles. Reynolds, Avery Osborn and Jessica Spray each added a run batted in.

But night-time settled in afterward, as Hopkins managed just three singles, one each by Madison Schwartz and Hibma against Zeeland pitcher K. Carlson.

Dahlia Veldhouse suffered the loss on the mound, last three and a third innings, giving up 10 of the 11 runs. Brinks finished up by working the last two-thirds of an inning.

The Vikings now own an 11-6 record overall and they’re 7-0 in the O-K Silver Conference. Coach Amy Funk has made it a deliberate points for her team to face tougher competition outside of league play, even through the overall record is at risk.
