After hitting a bad patch in the season a week ago in four of six games, the Hopkins softball team regained its chops and swept a doubleheader Friday against Holland Christian.
The Lady Vikings pulled out a 10-9 thriller in the opener and then frolicked in a 14-3 triumph in the nightcap. The sweep brought their overall season record to 15-6.
The heroine in the first game thriller was Hannah Wubben, who delivered a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning. But there were others who stepped up as well.
Down 9-5 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Vikings came up with clutch hits. The biggest blow was a three-run homer by Haliegh Miller. Sierra Smith then reached first on a bunt single and came home on Wubben’s game-winning two-bagger.
Winning pitcher Madelyn Schans went 4-for-4 at the plate. She doubled in the first, homered in the third, doubled in the fifth, and singled in the seventh. On the mound, she allowed ten hits and nine runs over seven innings, striking out six and walking one.
Hopkins tallied 13 hits. Schans, Smith, Miller, and Wubben all managed multiple hits.
