Hopkins, Wayland finish in the middle at Sparta meet

The Hopkins boys’ cross-country team placed third in its division Saturday at the Sparta Invitational. Wayland, meanwhile, finished fifth in the Gold Division.

The Lady Vikings took fourth, edged by Belding, which had the same team points at 84, but had a faster sixth position runner.

The Viking lads accumulated 102 team points, finishing behind the Grand Rapids Track Club Peregrines and Grand Rapids West Michigan Aviation, but ahead of O-K Silver Conference rival Belding.

Running with a full lineup, Hopkins got a top 10 performance from sophomore Jack Estelle, who crossed the finish line in sixth place with a five-kilometer time of 17:24.7.

Kenyon Katje took 19th in 18:35.9 and freshmen Isaiah Robinson and Marek Zapolink and sophomore Johnathon Buskirk rounded out the scoring with finishes of 26th, 28th and 32nd, respectively.

So one of the Viking boys who scored were seniors.

Senior Jaeden Harshberger checked in eighth in 20:52.75 to pace the Hopkins girls.

Junior Kambria Moored placed 11th, sophomore Alison Breining was 17th, freshman Lillian Dewey 22nd and Abigail Zalis 26th.

Grand Rapids Track Club Peregrines won the division with just 18 team points.

Wayland’s Dylan Pallett and Isaac Dyer ran close together, as usual, and place ninth and 10th, respectively, with creditable times of 16:45.4 and 16.51.7.

Freshman Xander Stepek was 22nd in 17:44.42, freshman Mason Fein was 37th in 19:11.94 and sophomore Ethan Manning 43rd in 20:03.66.

O-K Gold Conference powerhouse Forest Hills Eastern won the Gold Division title with 41 points, six better than host Sparta.

The Wayland girls again were unable to come up with a full five-person team and wasn’t listed in the scoring. Senior Eliot Antel finished 35th.
