Hopkins wins see-saw 4-3 nail-biter over Calvin Christian

The Hopkins varsity baseball team lifted its overall season record to 9-2-1 with a nail-biting, see-saw 4-3 victory Monday over Calvin Christian.

The game was tied at three with the Vikings batting in the top of the seventh inning when Brenden Gossman singled in what turned out to be the winning run. Calvin Christian had evened things up at three in the bottom of the sixth. Interestingly, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie over the first three innings until the Squires plated a single run.

Hopkins scored three runs in the sixth, its big inning, highlighted by a single by Caleb Ryan and a triple by Ezran Tehennepe.

Alex Steffes earned the win on the mound. He tossed one and two-thirds innings in relief, giving up no runs, zero hits, striking out one and walking one.

Zach Brechting started the game for Hopkins. He tossed five and a third innings, giving up three runs, six hits, striking out ten, and walking one.

The Vikings Varsity collected eight hits. Gossman and Ryan each collected two hits to lead the way.
