Improving ‘Cat bowlers almost upset South Christian

The Wayland boys’ varsity bowling team, which has been on a bit of a roll lately, came within just one spare of upsetting South Christian, one of the two best teams in the O-K Gold/Green Conference.

The Wildcats lost 16-14 to a team that perhaps is second only to Byron Center in the league.

“I felt so bad for my boys tonight, but yet so proud of what they accomplished,” coach Sherry Miklusicak said. “They are gaining confidence with every match. They are a class act team.”

The Wildcats lost the first Baker match 175-165.

“I knew the game would come down to spare shooting but, little did I know how it would come down to just one spare,” the coach remarked. “These were the four point we would need.”

Baker game two went to Wayland by a commanding 192 -151. Since Baker games are worth four points for each game and two for total pins, the ‘Cats were up 6-4.

Wayland boys took seven out of nine possible points in the first individual match competition and was up 13-4

“We knew we could win and so did South,” Miklusicak said. “We would only need 3 of the next 11 points.

The scores in the first of the individuals were: Alex Marble 185 (only lost his point by 5 pins), Jordan Peters 187, Dylan Roberts 201, Bryan Franck 154 and Dillon Smith 196.

In the second individuals it was Alex Marble 169, Jordan Peters 190
Bryan Franck 202, Dylan Roberts 236 (yet he didn’t take point)
Dillon Smith 218 (again, but no point).

“I would feel safe to say that 9.5 times out of 10, we would have easily taken four individual points plus four total points to easily win the game,” the coach commented. “South Christian dug deep and it was a match I will never forget. (It only comes in second to the 300 gameshot by Cameron Heintzelman a couple of years ago – but this one was special since it was a team effort).

“We only mustered one more point when we needed three. Hats off to South as they rolled games of 210, 205, 199, 255, and 245. That 1114 total is the highest five-game match in the conference this year.

“Unfortunately, it was against us.”
