The Wayland High School girls’ basketball team rode a 21-4 fourth quarter burst to overcome an upset bid by South Christian Tuesday night.
The 51-44 verdict was the Lady Wildcats’ seventh straight victory and cemented their hold on second place in the O-K Gold Conference. Wayland, at 10-2, is just a game in back of Grand Rapids Catholic Central, a team it lost to by one point in overtime.
South Christian, which is 7-6 in league play, led by 10 points, 40-30, as the two teams entered the final eight minutes.
As usual, junior Harmony Laker paced the Lady Wildcats’ offensive attack with 22 points, including three, three-point field goals. Sophomore Addy Sikorsky counted 11 points, sophomore Laney Wolf added eight and senior Reese Coughlin six.
Both Wayland and South Christian will be among the teams in the district tournament early next month on the Sailors’ home floor. The Wildcats likely will be the second seed behind Holland Christian.
The Wayland boys’ hoops squad dropped a 63-38 decision to South Christian to fall to 3-18 on the season overall.
The Wayland girls’ and boys’ teams will play Grand Rapids Catholic Central Friday night.
