The Wayland girls’ basketball team came up with a big O-K Gold Conference victory Friday evening at Wyoming High School, 46-43.
The Wildcats and Wolves have been fighting for third place in the league standings behind state-ranked Grand Rapids West Catholic and South Christian. The ‘Cats moved to 5-3 in the Gold and 11-5 overall. Wyoming fell to 3-5.
Junior inside player Addie Sikorski stepped up her game in the fourth quarter while record-setting career scorer Harmony was retired to the sidelines in foul trouble. Sikorski finished the contest with 17 points and Laker had 10. Marissa Ainsworth added nine points to the attack.
Laker still managed to nail two three-point field goals, as did Ainsworth, and Laney Wolf and Izzy Johnson had one apiece.
Later in the evening, the Wayland boys’ squad lost 72-35 to Wyoming, causing their overall season record to fall to 9-9.
Hopkins girls 31 Kelloggsville 12
The Lady Vikings captured their fifth consecutive victory, beating Kelloggsville with a 31-12 score similar to their earlier 29-10 triumph last month. Hopkins now owns an 8-7 overall record and is 7-2 in league play, a fixture in third place behind Calvin Christian and Belding.
Martin girls 52 Galesburg-Augusta 44
It was a good night for the Lady Clippers, why picked up revenge from a 44-38 loss to the Rams earlier in the season.
“Tonight was such a big win for us,” said coach Ben Schipper. “We needed this for the girls to see the hard work they’re putting in will pay off. Our energy was top notch tonight. This was the most locked in the girls have been all year. The desire to win and to execute was there tonight more than any other game so far.
The Lady Clippers led throughout the ballgame, though it was always relatively close.
“We’ve been playing some really good teams very tough lately and I believe the team is starting to understand that all the adversity should be used as learning experiences to make us tougher and grittier.,” Schipper said. “Tonight was a gritty win.
“Speaking of adversity, we even had our fire alarms try to squash our momentum by making the entire gym evacuate with 3:55 left in the fourth quarter!”
Avery Jager picked up where she left off from the previous night’s fourth quarter and overtimes hitting four threes scoring 13 points. Torryn Harris led the attack with 15 points. Alley Bacon played her best game of the year, scoring 11 points and her coach said she was adept at keeping the team composed at the end of the game.
Kayden Jager played well with seven points and took care of the ball, Maggie Jager scored four points, “but had so many key toughness plays for us tonight. Every single girl positively impacted the game.”
Harris had seven rebounds and three steals, Avery Jager grabbed eight rebounds Bacon also came up with three steals.
The Lady Clippers now are 5-10 for the season overall.
The Martin boys were defeated 74-32 by Galesburg-Augusta and they saw their overall record for the season slip to 5-11.
