The Wayland girls’ varsity bowling team defeated Grand Rapids Catholic Central 20-10 Monday, but the boys lost 21-9 at the Rock ‘N Bowl Lanes in Wayland.
It was a rocky beginning for the ladies. After a couple of low score baker games, the Lady Wildcats found themselves down 6-4, but then took seven of the next nine points to lead 13-6. Taking match points were Hayley Taylor 150, Breanna Hyde 140, Bella Harnish 158 and Kadence Bottrall 174.
In Match two, Wayland again took seven of nine points to seal the win. Sarisa Cawley, Bella Harnish 193 and Kadence Bottrall 181 took points.
The Wildcats welcome newcomer, Faith Stid to the team.
“We really wanted a win tonight, but that wasn’t the case,” boys’ team coach Sherry Miklusicak said. “We were well on our way in baker game one.”
Alan Beggs and Max Oosterhouse started Wayland on the right foot with two strikes in both their first, second, sixth and seventh frames. Stephen Harnish added a spare and a strike in his two frames.
“With five strikes, you would think we were assured a win. Unfortunately, we had four opens to fill the other four frames. It was important for us to win the bakers tonight.
The Wildcats had six strikes and two spares came away with a 192 game to win by enough to take the baker total as well and go up 6-4. Harnish and Oosterhouse both four-for-four in the bakers.
But the ‘Cats only were able to get three of the remaining 20 points. Oosterhouse had a nice 182 game, earning his point in match one. In match two, Deven Gardner took his point, as did Mark Musgrave III, with a 199 game.
“Our team scores were too low to win, but what I did notice was that we had a ton of good first ball counts which is great,” Miklusicak said. “I wasn’t writing about that earlier in the season. Now it is time to focus on those single pin spares. We need to get better at those now and have been working on them in practice, especially that darn 10-pin.
Practice will build confidence, but only if it is a priority in the boys’ mental game. That is our next goal.”
