Lady ‘Cats stop Kenowa, but face a tough week ahead

The race for the O-K Gold girls’ basketball championship essentially is coming down to just two teams, Wayland and South Christian.

The Lady Wildcats Friday evening defeated a Kenowa Hills outfit that entered the contest in second place, 57-42. The verdict left the ‘Cats with a record of 9-1 and dropped Kenowa to 7-3. South Christian, which late last month upset Wayland 54-48, is 8-2.

It was the usual suspects who paced the offensive attack. Sophomore Harmony Laker led the way with 18 points, including a three. Reese Coughlin came up with 12 points and senior guard Maddy Terry had two threes and eight points. Freshman Addy Sikorsky added six and Laney Wolf and Liberty Laker had five apiece.

The Lady Wildcats, now 15-3 overall on the season, can’t afford to get too comfortable, as they will face Grand Rapids Catholic Central at the Cougars’ gym Tuesday. They await a rematch with South Christian next Friday at home.

Later in the evening, the Wayland boys defeated Kenowa 71-53 to avenge a loss to the Knights last month and to climb into a tie with Forest Hills Eastern for fourth place in th league at 5-5. Overall, the Wildcats are 10-6.
