Gracie Shettler

The Martin girls’ varsity basketball team suffered its second consecutive defeat, this time Wednesday at Watervliet, 50-39.

The Clippers boys came up short by one point, 61-60, on the same night on the home court.

The wheels came off for the Lady Clippers in the second and third periods. They led 16-15 at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored 11-5 in the second period to trail 26-21 at intermission.

Things went from bad to worse in the third quarter when host Watervliet enjoyed a 14-3 advantage to take a 40-24 advantage into the final eight minutes.

Gracie Shettler led Martin offensively with 12 points, Bri Warner added 11 and Makala Goddard chipped in seven.

It was the first time the Martin girls have lost two in a row since the 2019 season. They dropped a 50-49 heartbreaker Monday to a Saugatuck squad that now owns a 5-0 overall record.

The Lady Clippers, now 2-2, will try to stop the bleeding Friday evening at Fennville, where the Blackhawks have been struggling mightily.
