The Martin girls’ varsity basketball team will take a 5-1 record overall into the holiday break after a 47-9 thrashing of Fennville Friday evening.

The boys’ squad, however, fell 61-44 to Fennville later in the evening.

Coach Ben Schipper’s crew started slow with a 16-6 lead at intermission, but dominated the homestanding Blackhawks in the second half, holding them to just one field goal and a free throw.

Gracie Shettler led the offensive attack again with 26 points, including three three-point field goals. Cirstin Colburn came up with 10 points, her highest output in her brief varsity career thus far.

“We started off with some energy in the first quarter getting six quick points, but we quickly became complacent,” said coach Ben Schipper. “We were working unnecessarily hard to get into our offense. We discussed some things at halftime about handling pressure and making things easier on ourselves. We also stressed being more aggressive on offense with our dribble drive.

“We came out in the second half an executed those changes well. Gracie Shettler took our challenge and scored 20 of her 26 in the second half and we were also very proud of the way Cirsten Coburn handled the pressure and attacked the paint. She also did a great job in the passing lanes defensively getting many deflections.”
The Lady Clippers have reeled off five consecutive victories after their season-opening loss to Hopkins.
