The Martin girls’ varsity basketball team each game tries to come up with more assists than turnovers and it’s gotten so good at it that it’s become the norm.
The Lady Clippers, who beat Zion Christian Tuesday night 59-33 to improve to 14-1 overall, now average more of the former per game than the latter. Tuesday night they had 17 assists, 12 turnovers.
“This is an amazing accomplishment in high school basketball and it shows the commitment our team has made to playing selflessly and cherishing possessions.,” said coach Ben Schipper.
They were never in trouble in the non-league contest, taking lead of 19-10, 32-15 and 46-26 at the first three period stops.
Junior Bri Warner had 15 points and seven rebounds, Faith Guritz had 15 points, six rebounds six assists and four steals. Kiaya Warner added 13 points and Gracie Shettler seven. Freddie Elkins hauled down seven rebounds.
“This was an incredibly well balanced game for us, which has been the theme for our offense all year,” Schipper said. “Faith played another all round game while Kiaya and Bri’s shooting came alive, both netting three threes.
“Our girls coming off the bench all gave good minutes and we had a lot of fun tonight. We’re very proud of the girls’ continued effort and focus. We’ve been extremely locked in lately and it’s exactly how we want to be heading towards the end of the regular season.”
Later in the evening, the Martin boys’ team defeated Zion Christian 53-37 to lift its overall season record to 6-9.
