The Martin girls’ basketball team bounced back from a rare and modest two-game losing streak Tuesday night by turning back Allegan 46-30.

The Lady Clipper overcame a slow start, tied at 10-all at the end of the first quarter, took a 22-16 into intermission and then began to pull away with a 17-4 cushion in the third period. The verdict left them with an overall record of 11-3 for the season.

“Tonight was a great bounce back game for us, giving us some great momentum,” coach Ben Schipper.” We were thrilled with the way our girls battled tonight and really ran away with the game in the third quarter.

“We’re very proud of the physicality we played with tonight and we were so much more aggressive than we have been the last couple of games.”

The coach noted his team had to battle against Allegan’s height advantage.

“We made some personnel adjustments in the second half and switched some matchups to put Liz Reinke on Rynearson to try and limit her post up effectiveness and that really made a difference.

“We executed our defensive game plan very well. Offensively we got off to the races in the third quarter with our fast break and did a great job hitting some backdoor cuts. When Allegan chose to go to their 3-2 zone, our ball movement and selflessness led to great shots.”

Martin pushed its lead to 46-20 in the fourth.

Torryn Harris and Avery Jager’s scoring was a huge part of the third quarter run and Makala Goddard was making her fast break passes all over the floor during that stretch and was in sync with cutters on the back doors.

Jager finished with 13 points, Harris had 10 and Goddward eight. Rynearson netted 15 for Allegan.

The Martin boys’ basketball team lost 61-27 to Zion Christian to fall to 0-16 for the campaign.

Wayland also lost Tuesday night, 57-46, to Cedar Springs and its record slipped to 2-14.
